Some companies are built around a product. Blackmer was built around solving a problem.
More than 125 years ago, one engineer looked at the limitations of the industry's most common pump and asked a simple question: Why should performance decline just because equipment wears? The answer changed fluid-handling technology forever.
That mindset – challenging convention to solve real-world customer problems – has guided Blackmer ever since. What began with one groundbreaking invention has grown into a global portfolio of pumps and compressors trusted across the energy, chemical, transportation, military, marine and industrial markets.
Here's the story behind the Blackmer name and the innovations that continue to move industries around the world.
One Idea That Changed Pumping Forever
At the close of the 19th century, gear pumps were the standard for moving fluids. They did the job, but they came with a frustrating limitation. As their gears wore over time, efficiency declined and flow rates dropped. Operators simply accepted that loss of performance as part of doing business.
Robert M. Blackmer believed there had to be a better way.
Instead of relying on gears, he pioneered the use of vanes. His revolutionary self-compensating rotary vane pump allowed the vanes to automatically extend as they wore, maintaining tight contact with the pump casing and delivering consistent performance throughout the life of the pump.
This elegantly simple solution to a widespread problem laid the groundwork for an entirely new category of positive displacement pump technology and ultimately gave rise to the Blackmer Pumps, Power and Manufacturing Company. More importantly, it established a philosophy that continues to define Blackmer today – don't accept limitations; engineer around them.
"That one idea, vanes that compensate for wear instead of gears that simply wear out, did more than launch a company. It fundamentally changed how the industry thought about pump performance, and its influence is still evident in sliding vane technology more than 125 years later."

Growing Alongside Modern Industry

Blackmer's innovation arrived at exactly the right moment.
As automobiles transformed transportation and the petroleum industry expanded rapidly in the early 1900s, operators needed equipment that could perform reliably under increasingly demanding conditions. The sliding vane pump answered that need.
Demand quickly grew beyond Robert Blackmer's original design. What started as a single pump evolved into hundreds of models serving customers across North America. By 1914, Blackmer was supplying equipment to the U.S. military. Just a few years later, the company's pumps helped power one of the first commercial fuel delivery trucks, demonstrating that dependable fluid transfer would become essential wherever products needed to move safely and efficiently.

By 1925, Blackmer had established its permanent home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, laying the foundation for decades of continued innovation.
Rather than simply selling pumps, Blackmer was earning something even more valuable: the trust of industries that couldn't afford equipment failures.
Innovation Under Pressure
History has a way of revealing which technologies are truly dependable.
During World War II, Blackmer pumps supported a wide range of military operations, from fueling aircraft and servicing diesel engines to marine applications and other mission-critical uses. Equipment wasn't operating in ideal conditions. It had to perform wherever it was needed, often under extraordinary circumstances.

Those experiences reinforced a principle that would shape the company's future – every new application presents a new engineering challenge.

As the post-war industrial economy expanded, so did the need to safely move liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other specialized fluids. Blackmer responded by introducing innovations like the integral mechanical seal and, in 1954, the groundbreaking LGL Series Sliding Vane Pump, the company's first product specifically designed for LPG and other industrial gases.
Once again, Blackmer wasn't simply adding another product to its catalog. It was solving an emerging industry challenge before many others had recognized it.
Expanding to Solve More Customer Challenges
As industries evolved, so did the questions customers brought to Blackmer.
Some applications demanded higher pressures. Others required new sealing technologies, specialized materials or entirely different pumping principles. Rather than trying to make one technology solve every problem, Blackmer expanded its engineering capabilities.
Joining Dover Corporation in 1964 opened the door to even greater opportunities for growth. Over the following decades, Blackmer significantly expanded its product portfolio. This growth included LB Series Reciprocating Gas Compressors, centrifugal pumps (acquired through the purchase of System One Pumps in 2000), regenerative turbine pumps (made possible through a 2014 agreement with Australian-based Ebsray), as well as screw pumps and internal gear pumps built specifically for asphalt applications.
Becoming one of the founding brands of PSG in 2008 further strengthened its ability to serve customers with an expanded range of technologies while maintaining the engineering expertise that had defined the company from the beginning.
Each addition reflected the same philosophy that inspired Robert Blackmer's original invention, beginning with a deep understanding of the application and engineering the best solution to meet its needs.
That philosophy continues today through innovations such as the GNX and GNXH Series Sliding Vane Pumps, MAGNES Series Magnetic Drive Pumps and the expanded line of Motor Speed Internal Gear Pumps and CRYO-MACH Cryogenic Centrifugal Pumps, each designed to address evolving customer needs for efficiency, safety and reliability.
"The applications have changed dramatically over the last century, but our approach hasn't. Every new technology we introduce begins with understanding the challenges our customers are trying to solve."

More Than One Technology. But Still One Engineering Philosophy.
Today, Blackmer manufactures multiple pump and compressor technologies, each designed to solve a different set of transfer challenges.
Sliding Vane Pumps

The technology that started it all remains one of the industry's most trusted solutions. Thanks to their self-adjusting vane design, Blackmer sliding vane pumps maintain volumetric efficiency longer than traditional clearance-based pump designs while offering excellent self-priming capability and the versatility to handle a wide range of viscosities.
Internal Gear Pumps

For applications involving highly viscous products, asphalt and other demanding fluids, Blackmer internal gear pumps provide smooth, low-pulsation flow while accommodating specialized operating requirements, including newer direct motor-speed designs.
Reciprocating Gas Compressors

Rounding out the portfolio are Blackmer reciprocating gas compressors, which move and recover gases including LPG, anhydrous ammonia, carbon dioxide, refrigerants and natural gas. They deliver high-efficiency performance in vapor recovery, railcar and transport unloading applications where reliability under severe conditions matters most.
Regenerative Turbine Pumps

When operators need high pressure from compact equipment, regenerative turbine pumps deliver exceptional performance. Their unique design makes them particularly well suited for handling volatile, low-viscosity fluids such as LPG and Autogas.
Cryogenic Centrifugal Pumps

Engineered for reliability, performance and easy maintenance, Blackmer CRYO-MACH Series Cryogenic Centrifugal Pumps excel at handling liquified gases in critical applications, from trailer loading and vessel transfer to plant recirculation and continuous processing. Every pump is designed, manufactured and inspected under the industry’s most rigorous quality standards.
Centrifugal Pumps

For high-flow applications, Blackmer centrifugal pumps provide efficient dynamic pumping performance across demanding industrial environments, complementing the company's positive displacement technologies with another proven fluid-handling solution.
Although each technology operates differently, they all share the same purpose of helping customers safely, efficiently and reliably transfer product.
