Neptune™ Metering Pumps Help Optimize Chemical Injection In Industrial Irrigation Systems

There’s no question that water is the lifeblood for nearly every industry in the world. Farms, nurseries, greenhouses, orchards, vineyards and golf courses are just a few that couldn’t operate all without a steady, reliable supply of water to keep their crops lush and viable or, in the case of golf courses, visually appealing and attractive for the user. For the most part, Mother Nature is the main source for the supply of water that is necessary to keep these operations running as expected. However, there are times when she needs some assistance in making sure that the crops can grow to their utmost potential.

In situations like these, chemicals are injected into the water supply that are designed to help optimize crop growth. In order for these chemicals to do their job properly, they must be injected in the proper doses and at the proper time; too much or too little, or a treatment that is mis-timed, will do more harm than good and adversely affect output and the growing operation’s bottom line.

When chemical injection is called for, more and more operators are discovering that metering pumps are the most efficient, reliable and trustworthy way to for the various chemicals to be introduced to the water supply. Specifically, metering pumps are perfect for injection operations because they are reciprocating positive displacement pumps that deliver precise amounts of chemicals, acids and fertilizers/nutrients, which enables the grower to control the amount and timing and timing of the application.

There are two methods of irrigation in which the capabilities of metering pumps really outshine competitive technologies:

  • Center-Pivot Irrigation: These systems allow large amounts of water to be spread over a large area in a short amount of time. As with all watering systems, chemical or fertilizer injection must be precise and reliable. A chemigation/fertilization system that features metering pumps is perfect for center-pivot watering because the pump’s flow rate can be set easily, ensuring that the proper amount of fertilizer or chemical will be applied through the center-pivot system each and every time. Applying these chemicals or fertilizers at precise times during the growing season will boost yield while requiring less chemicals or fertilizers to realize those higher yields.
  • Drip Irrigation: This system of water delivery, which is also known as micro-irrigation, trickle irrigation or localized irrigation, relies on a network of valves, piping, “drip tape” and emitters that allow water to drip slowly to the roots of the plants, either aboveground through direct application to the oil’s surface or via the root zone 12 to 18 inches below ground. Drip irrigation can be more efficient than other forms of water delivery because the water and any chemicals/fertilizers are applied directly to the roots, which results in more targeted water and fertilizer/nutrient usage and lower costs. Metering pumps are the perfect way to introduce any chemicals or fertilizers/nutrients to the drip-irrigation systems.
